In the summer of 5740-1980 the Lubavitcher Rebbe called for the establishment of Torah-study programs for retirees, named, at the Rebbe's suggestion, Kollel Tiferet Zkeinim Levi Yitzchok, in honour of his saintly father. In a public address at that time, the Rebbe spoke at length about the plight of the elderly in contemporary society, and called for a vigorous, widespread effort to rectify the situation."There should be no such thing as compulsory retirement," the Rebbe said. "Older people who are compelled, for whatever reason, to relinquish their job or positions, should be helped to redirect their lives productively, for their own sake and for the benefit of the younger generation." The Rebbe proposed that special Torah study classes and learning groups be established for men and for women.
About US
Kollel Tiferes Zkeinim Levi Yitzchok - Toronto, was founded in 2014 and runs 10:00-11:30 AM daily Monday-Friday, at the Chabad Lubavitch Community Centre in Thornhill. The Kollel provides an opportunity for retirees to study b'chavrusa (study partner) as well as daily Shiurim of Talmud, Mishna Halacha and Parsha. As per the Rebbe's suggestion, participants receive a stipend at the end of each month.Scripture tells us "Rov shanim yodi'u chochma" (Many years bring wisdom), and our sages also tell us that the minds of elderly scholars become more settled with age. These classes and learning groups, have become a means of making the later years truly "golden years."
